Welcome to the Language and Learning Development Faculty

SEN Policy Support for Learning - Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Year 10 Year 11

Walthamstow School for Girls is a fully inclusive school with an outstanding reputation for work with students who have additional language and learning needs.

Our experienced and dedicated team of teachers and learning support assistants provide in-class support across the range of subjects and we have a specialist area within the school where students can access a more nurturing environment when required. Girls are supported in their learning according to their individual needs through a wide range of in-class and extra-curricular extension activities.

The Language and Learning Development Faculty ensures that students with Special Educational Needs and EAL students (English as an Additional Language) are assisted appropriately to make good progress. On entry to Walthamstow School for Girls all students are assessed for their language and learning needs using a range of assessments. There is close liaison with feeder primary schools so that relevant information is known before transfer to Walthamstow School for Girls. Parents/Carers are involved in, and informed of, the faculty’s work and their daughter’s progress at all stages through annual statement reviews, parent evening consultations and informal discussions about students’ progress.

Walthamstow School for Girls is a multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual school. More than half of our students speak or understand more than one language and there are 43 different languages spoken every day by students and staff at our school.

The work of the EAL Teachers is to develop effective teaching for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) so that they become more fluent in their use of English while they are learning National Curriculum subjects. This is done by working together with subject teachers in the classroom.

All EAL teachers are experienced in the differentiated teaching of English language for academic purposes. We celebrate cultural diversity and recognize that bilingualism is an asset to the development of language, learning and thinking skills.

Parents/ carers are welcome to contact our school’s SENCO Ms B. Hallas to discuss their daughter’s needs and progress by phoning the school office on 0208 509 9446.
