World Pi Day 2017

The Maths Faculty celebrate with a Pop Up Café

As has become a tradition at Walthamstow School for Girls, the Maths Faculty celebrated World Pi Day on this week. Maths classes had Pi Recitation competitions, cupcake competitions and the day culminated with a Pi themed opening of Mathé, the Pop Up Café, at which there were cakes and Pi earrings for sale. Many thanks to Mr Monksfield for making the Pi trophies and cutting the earrings with the laser cutter.

Here is a selection of quotes from the students.

I really enjoyed my first Pi Day. Over 5 days, I tried to learn as much of pi as I could. My strategy was to find patterns and to memorise in groups of 4. I felt really nervous on my first go and only managed to recite pi to 46 decimal places. On my second go I felt much more confident and recited it correctly to 122 decimal places !! I felt very proud of myself and couldn’t believe that I was top of the class. The whole experience was very enjoyable and I learnt how to be resilient and never give up. I am already looking forward to Pi Day 2018, when I plan to recite even more of pi.

I looked up some quotes about Pi to find out more about it. This is my favourite
‘Love is like Pi, natural, irrational and very important’ by Lisa Hoffman
Pi is irrational as it can’t be written as a fraction, and love is irrational as it is not logical.

I found the day lots of fun and really interesting. I learnt pi by memorising it in chunks and was very pleased with my prize.

I took part in the Pi competition. It was a really extravagant and fun lesson. I was very pleased that I improved each time I tried. We were all given three chances. I recited pi to 27, then 39, then 45 decimal places, from a starting point of not knowing pi at all. The practice really helped.

Pi Day is always a fantastic opportunity for the girls to experience the effect of having a Growth Mindset. Nobody is born knowing Pi. With effort and practice, anything is possible!
