GCSE Examination Results 2017

Another Successful GCSE Results Day at Walthamstow School for Girls

Students arrived at WSFG early on Thursday morning, excited to learn how they had fared in the summer 2017 examinations.   The reformed GCSE grading system for English language, English literature and Mathematics made it hard for them to benchmark their achievements – out are the old A*-G gradings, replaced by the more stringent 9-1 system and although advice has been not to compare these results with previous years’ results, it was impossible for students not to attempt comparison in order to understand the outcomes and their degree of success.

Overall provisional results point to another very successful year for WSFG with 70% achieving 5 A*-C grades (9-4) including English and Mathematics with 30% of entries from all subjects being awarded an A* or A (7-9) grade.    The new measures of a “good pass” for the new and more challenging English and mathematics GCSEs were very strong, with results for English at 92% and for Mathematics at 72%.   Seven students achieved the highest Grade 9 in Mathematics, seven students achieved the highest Grade 9 in English Language and a spectacular 26 students achieved Grade 9 in English Literature.   One student achieved Grade 9 in all three subjects.

Joining the students to help calm their nerves was Council Leader, Clare Coghill, who met students and was able to offer early congratulations on their successes.  As the first female leader of the Council in its 65 year history, Cllr Coghill was keen to support the girls on this important occasion for them.  She was accompanied by David Kilgallon, Director of Learning and System Leadership, LBWF.

Meryl Davies, Headteacher, commented, “This is a day to celebrate the academic achievements of our students at all levels of ability and the progress they have made in their five years at WSFG.  I am so proud of what the students have accomplished and how they have adapted to the new, tougher format for GCSE examinations.  Through hard work, commitment to their studies and with the support of our dedicated staff, our students have achieved the success they deserve and the best of starts to their sixth form education.”
