Year 8 British Museum Trip

Curriculum focussed RS Visit

In February, 30 year 8 students were taken to the British Museum to support their learning experiences in Religious Studies.

Students got to explore three main spaces of the museum: Asia (with a focus on the Dharmic faiths and a brief exploration of Chinese funeral traditions); Egypt (with a focus on death rites and mummification) and the Islamic World (reviewing Islamic art and artefacts from Muslim history); and Greek (mainly exploring Greek mythology).

It was a busy day, with lots of walking, leading to many tired students. However, they remained positive and had a good opportunity deepen their knowledge and make new discoveries about a range of religions and cultures.

I thought this trip was really fun because we didn't just go to a museum to look around pointlessly, but we actually looked at the exhibits that relate to the topics we have/are doing in year 8 RS. This really helped our understanding on the Dharmic faiths as well as other religious figures that we may have discussed during the lesson. I also think it was great for us to be able to go off in smaller groups to complete the questions in our booklets by ourselves because we may all work at different paces and may want to spend more time at an exhibit that other people may not be interested as much in. Overall, I think this trip was a great balance in between being educational and very much enjoyable and I'm glad that I got to be a part of it.

At the British Museum I learnt a lot more than I expected, and I also surprisingly had lots of fun. One of the things we looked at were the different Buddhas and what their hand symbols meant, there was even this funny chicken (or some type of bird) spreading out their arms and doing what looked like the heavy metal sign (🤟) with their hands! We also took a little visit to Ancient Egypt and had a look at some sarcophaguses (which were engraved with old writing), and how Egyptians used to wrap the mummies before putting them in a sarcophagus.
